He wants to tie me up, but I don’t know his face.

ARC Review of I Want You Back by Lorelei James

review-lips copy

Wow! This is my first book by the talented Lorelei James and I was blown away! I Want You Back is book one in her new Want You series.

The characters were written so flawlessly, seeming so real, I struggled to put this book down, needing to devour every word and soak it in. Even when I was forced to put it down to adult, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Jax and Lucy’s story broke my heart then taped it back together. This is a story about love, forgiveness and second chances.

The strength Lucy inspired left me breathless. She was such a selfless woman and having to endure the awfulness of a love gone bad was heartbreaking. She was so strong, a lot sassy and was willing to not let the past dictate her future.

Jax. At first, I didn’t know what to think of this sexy, egotistical man.

“I may not kiss you tonight, but by our third date you will know how perfectly wicked it’ll feel to have my mouth all over you.”

He was young and listened to the wrong person and it changed his life forever. He broke my heart with how he treated the ‘love of his life’ and his child before he confronted his addiction. I was elated for him in his decision to get healthy and in time, get her (them) back.  And then left me holding my breath when he bared his soul and all his secrets only to fear losing her again because of them.

Addiction is an ugly beast and I think this author did a great job of showing the struggle isn’t just contained to the person with the addiction, but everyone around them. It was wonderful to see that both Jax and Lucy had a unshakable support system.

I absolutely loved feeling like I was part of Lucy and Jax’s story and I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Former NHL star Jaxson Lund has returned to the Twin Cities, but he’s at loose ends, unsure if he belongs at Lund Industries, or where he stands with Lucy, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his daughter, Mimi. Despite the signs she’d like to leave him in the penalty box, the attraction burning between them reinforces his determination to prove that he deserves a second chance…

Lucy Quade is in a good place with a steady job, a nice apartment, and a well-adjusted daughter, which is why she’s hesitant when Jax insists on co-parenting. It’s not that Lucy doesn’t trust Jax…she’s just unconvinced he can handle multiple responsibilities when he’s been singularly focused on playing hockey. But when issues arise with Mimi, Lucy’s shocked at how levelheaded and paternal he acts, giving her a glimpse of the Jax she used to know, the sexy, sweet man she fell for years ago.

Once Lucy lets her guard down, Jax goes all in to show her how good they are together, but will their past remain too large an obstacle to ever overcome?

Review of Ruckus by L.J. Shen

review-lips copy

This book is book two in L.J. Shen’s infamous Sinners of Saint series. It was full of heart and soul and gave me all the feels.  So, this is my solid 5 star review!

My excitement for Dean and Rosie’s book started in book one and I couldn’t get it out of my brain until I finally got to read it.  AND THEN….I suffered a Hothole book hangover for weeks. I loved Dean and Rosie together. They were perfect for one another!

In the first book, we saw the relationship between Emilia and Dean develop after Vicious is repeatedly mean to her.  Of course the pull between Vic and Em was too strong and Em broke Dean’s heart when she left town. But her heart wasn’t hers to give, it always belonged to Vicious.

In Ruckus, Dean is living it up HotHole style in NYC.  He is pissed at the world and self-medicates and whores around to hide his true self so no one gets close enough to hurt him again.  To say he has issues, yeah, buy this boy a new stand.

“If it’s corrupted and dirty and fun – I’m all over it.”

Rosie is sweet but guarded.  Strong yet weak. She is sick and everyone treats her as such.  Everyone but Dean. She just wants to live her life and is tired of the constant hovering of her family.

“What make you feel alive?….”

She has had an obvious crush on Dean since high school, but she stepped back when Em and Dean got together.  I felt her pain. Seeing someone you fell for with someone else, kiss someone else….awful. And for it to be her own sister, she couldn’t get away from it.

“I hated everything about Dean Cole. Everything… but him.”

I spent most of this book hating Emilia for all of her secrets and lies and their parents for just being dicks.  Vicious was Vicious, so I let it slide, but Em was a shit sister. Which sucked, because I really liked her in book one.

“I never stopped loving Dean Cole. Not even for one damn moment. I just convinced myself that I stopped caring.”

The HUGE plot twist had me freaking the eff out!  Seriously, L.J.! I couldn’t read this book fast enough.  This book was heart and soul and gave me all the feels. If you haven’t read Ms. Shen’s books yet, you need to start.  She will put you through the ringer, but you will never forget her oh so unforgettable characters.

They say that life is a beautiful lie and death a painful truth. They’re right.
No one has ever made me feel more alive than the guy who serves as a constant reminder that my clock is ticking.
He is my forbidden, shiny apple.
The striking fallacy to my blunt, raw, truth.
He is also my sister’s ex-boyfriend.
One thing you should know before you judge me;
I saw him first. I craved him first. I loved him first.
Eleven years later, he waltzed into my life, demanding a second chance.
Dean Cole wants to be my bronze horseman. My white knight has finally arrived. Hopefully, he isn’t too late.

They say the brightest stars burn out the fastest. They’re right.
She sets my mind on fire.
All smart mouth, snarky attitude and a huge heart.
In a world where everything is dull, she shines like fucking Sirius.
Eleven years ago, fate tore us apart.
This time, I dare it to try.
Getting to her is a battlefield, but man, that’s why they call me Ruckus.
Rosie LeBlanc is about to find out how hard I can fight.
And conquering her will be the sweetest victory.

Review of Spider by Ilsa Madden-Mills

review lips

4 Broken Stars.

I went into this book somewhat blind only knowing it was about a step-brother rockstar. Let me start by saying, I LOVE this author. This is one of my 1-click authors. Everything she’s written I’ve devoured and loved, until this. I have a love/hate thing going on with this book.

2 days after reading, I remain conflicted on my feelings for this book. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely devoured it. I read it in less than 24 hours. The writing was flawless, the characters engaging, but I am not one that likes too much angst and there were some issues covered in the book that are triggers for me. But would I recommend this book? Abso-fucking-lutly! And here’s why.

Spider was a little bit broken because of a chain of events that happened after a family tragedy when he was in his early teens. He’s lost in a downward spiral with no one to save him from the fall. Then he meets her.

Rose spent most of her childhood happy living with her grandmother, until her death sent her back to live with her drug addicted mom. Some shit went down and she’s thrown into the foster system. But not before connecting with a boy who she thought she would never see again.

This story was intriguing. It was raw and it was real. I did get my HEA and while I loved it, if it were me in Rose’s position, with the hell he put her through, I can’t say it would have ended the same.

I am still conflicted on how I feel about Spider. One minute I love him and the next I think about the hell he put her through and I want to junk-punch him. It’s a love/hate thing for me. He needed to heal and grow and she gave him just what he needed to save himself. Her.

Overall, I think this was a book that not only needs to be read, but re-read. And if this comes out on Audio I’ll be 1-clicking that bitch too!

He’s a British rock star.
And my stepbrother.
What can go wrong?

He called himself Spider. I just knew him as the sinfully gorgeous guy with eyes of fire that fate sat next to me on the airplane. I didn’t know who he really was…rock star…my stepbrother.

He kissed me because he thought we’d never see each other again. We would.

Everyone warned me about him.
They said he was ruthless and cold and screwed up.
They said he’d leave me with a hole in my heart.

Maybe I should have listened.
Maybe I should have built up a fortress to keep him out.
But I crumbled instead.

Some have said there’s an unbreakable thread that connects those who are destined to meet. If that’s true, then the moment he sat next to me, we were bound together forever.

He just had to figure it out before it’s too late…

It was the gorgeous guy I’d seen in the elevator. And here I thought we’d had a little spark.

Bennett Fox grinned like he’d already been named my boss and extended his hand. “Welcome to Foster Burnett.”

Ugh. He wasn’t just good looking; he knew it, too.

“That would be Foster, Burnett and Wren, as of a few weeks ago, right?” I iced my subtle reminder that this was now our place of employment with a smile, suddenly thankful my parents had made me wear braces until I was nearly sixteen.

“Of course.” My new nemesis smiled just as brightly. Apparently his parents had sprung for orthodontic care, too.

Bennett Fox was also tall. I once read an article that said the average height of a man in the US was five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches; less than fifteen percent of men stood taller than six feet. Yet the average height of more than sixty-eight percent of Fortune 500 CEOs was over six feet. Subconsciously, we related size to power in more ways than just brawn.

Andrew was six foot two. I’d guess this guy was about the same.

Bennett pulled out the guest chair next to him. “Please, have a seat.”

Tall and with gentlemanly manners. I disliked him already.

During the ensuing twenty-minute pep talk given by Jonas Stern—in which he at-tempted to convince us we weren’t vying for the same position, but instead forging the way as leaders of the now-largest ad agency in the United States—I stole glances at Bennett Fox.

Shoes: definitely expensive. Conservative, oxford in style, but with a modern edge of topstitching. Ferragamo would be my guess. Big feet, too.

Suit: dark navy, tailored to fit his tall, broad frame. The kind of understated luxury that said he had money, but didn’t need to flaunt it to impress you.

He had one long leg casually crossed over the other knee, as if we were discussing the weather rather than being told everything we’d worked twelve hours a day, six days a week for was suddenly at risk of being in vain.

At one point, Jonas had said something we both agreed with, and we looked at each other, nodding. Given the opportunity for a closer inspection, my eyes roamed his hand-some face. Strong jaw, daringly straight, perfect nose—the type of bone structure passed down from generation to generation that was better and more useful than any monetary inheritance. But his eyes were the showstopper: a deep, penetrating green that popped from his smooth, tanned skin. Those were currently staring right at me.

I looked away, returning my attention to Jonas. “So what happens at the end of the ninety-day integration period? Will there be two Creative Directors of West Coast Marketing?”

Jonas looked back and forth between us and sighed. “No. But no one is going to lose his or her job. I was just about to tell Bennett the news. Rob Gatts announced he’ll be retiring in a few months. So there will be a position opening up for a creative director to replace him.”

I had no idea what that meant. But apparently Bennett did.

“So one of us gets shipped off to Dallas to replace Rob in the southwest region?” he asked.

Jonas’s face told me Bennett wouldn’t be happy about the prospect of heading to Texas. “Yes.”

All three of us let that sink in for a moment. The possibility of having to relocate to Texas shifted my mind back into gear, though.

“Who will make the decision?” I asked. “Because obviously you’ve been working with Bennett…”

Jonas shook his head and waved off what I was beginning to question. “Decisions like this—where two senior management positions are being merged into one office—the board will oversee and make the final determination of who gets first pick.”

Bennett was just as confused as me. “The board members don’t work with us on a daily basis.”

“No, they don’t. So they’ve come up with a method of making their decision.”

“Which is?”

“It’ll be based on three major client pitches. You’ll both come up with campaigns on your own and present them. The clients will pick which they like best.”

Bennett looked rattled for the first time. His perfect composure and self-assured-ness took a hit as he leaned forward and raked long fingers through his hair.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. More than ten years, and my job here comes down to a few pitches? I’ve landed half-a-billion dollars of ad accounts for this company.”

“I’m sorry, Bennett. I really am. But one of the conditions of the Wren merger was that due consideration be given to the Wren employees in positions that might be eliminated because of duplicity. The deal almost didn’t go through because Mrs. Wren was so insistent that she not sell her husband’s company, only to have the new organization strip away all of Wren’s hard-working employees.”

That made me smile. Mr. Wren was taking care of his employees even after he was gone.

“I’m up for the challenge.” I looked at Bennett, who was clearly pissed off. “May the best woman win.”

He scowled. “You mean man.”

Audiobook Review of Repeat by Kylie Scott

review lips

Go get this book! I listened to this on audiobook and Andi Arndt did an exceptional job, as always.

Repeat is the story of Ed and Clementine. After waking up in the hospital with no memory, Clementine struggles to piece together her past. When she walks into a local tattoo shop to see if they know her, she soon finds out that the tattooist is her ex. And he hates her.

Ed went through hell when the love of his life up and left him. Now he is just trying to move on; which is hard to do when she walks back into his life not remembering him or their past together.

This was a phenomenal book! I loved that even though Clementine hurt him, he can’t help but want to help her. He still cares for her but he just can’t open himself up to get hurt again. Poor Clementine. I felt so bad for her. With all her memories lost, she is just trying to figure out who she is.

As the story unfolds we find out that her attack was not just a random act of violence. She was targeted and whoever it is, isn’t done with her.

This book was full of suspense and sexy times. I loved the chemistry between these two and Andi Arndt was perfect for the narration. I highly recommend getting this book on both eBook and audio!

on a side note: I love when authors have their characters read books by other awesome authors. In this book, Clementine was reading Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley!

When a vicious attack leaves 25-year-old Clementine Johns with no memory, she’s forced to start over. Now she has to figure out who she was and why she made the choices she did – which includes leaving the supposed love of her life, tattoo artist Ed Larsen, only a month before.

Ed can hardly believe it when his ex shows up at his tattoo parlor with no memory of their past, asking about the breakup that nearly destroyed him. The last thing he needs is more heartache, but he can’t seem to let her go again. Should they walk away for good, or does their love deserve a repeat performance?
