Review: BROKEN KNIGHT by L.J. Shen

Broken Knight (All Saints High, #2)

Title: Broken Knight
Author: L.J. Shen
Publication Date: August 18, 2019
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I don’t know what to say about this book. I am at a loss for words at how this book, with all its pretty words, affected my life. My soul, really. So, here I am, laying it all out.

This book will forever go down as one of the very few books that I will NEVER forget. This book is right below Making Faces by Amy Harmon for me, which I read years ago and still cry about. It left beautiful scars that I will look back on and remember every emotion these characters brought out in me. There are several issues addressed in this book, and every single one of them was written with truth and grace. How this author can layer these characters to a point that you forget they are not real people is beyond me.

Ms. Shen didn’t simply write a book. She poured her heart and soul out on these pages. And it shows. As I sit here writing my review for this heartbreakingly amazing book, I have tears streaming down my face. Tears that cry for everything this book is. The loyal friends, the utter devastation heartbreak brings and the cherished childhood memories that will never be forgotten while making new ones. Ride or Die.

To be honest, I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I do or for it to affect me as much as it has. This book gave me allllll the feels! One of the best books I’ve read this year. All of L.J.’s characters are phenomenal, but these two hold a special place in my heart.

Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.

Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.
Who taught her how to laugh.
To live.
To love.
Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.

This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.

But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.
When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.

Review: Checkmate – This is Effortless by Kennedy Fox

Title: This Is Effortless (Checkmate Duet, #4; Drew & Courtney, #2)This Is Effortless
Author: Kennedy Fox
Series: Checkmate #4
Published: April 25, 2017
Genre: Romantic Comedy, College Romance

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another 4 stars for this amazing series! Checkmate: This is Effortless, Drew & Courtney, #2, is book 4 in the Checkmate Duet Series by Kennedy Fox. This duet series follows three couples, each couple having two books to tell their stories.

OMG! This book was perfect! After the last book ended on an EPIC cliffy, I couldn’t read this one fast enough when it fell onto my Kindle.

Drew and Court were adorable together. She put up with A LOT of crap from his psycho ex and she was so much stronger than I would have been. Her brothers were hilarious and loved the interaction between the siblings.

There were lots of moments I laughed out loud and several more where I was caught with a goofy grin on my face. There were so many twists that left me saying “no way” or just laughing my ass off. In this book it was irrevocably proven that Travis is indeed the KING!

Kayla may be my spirit animal. I love that we got to know Kayla (aka, the doggy dealer) a little better and I can’t wait for the next book to find out more about the ever mysterious Logan.

I love this friends to lovers romance! If you haven’t yet read Kennedy Fox books, you need to get on that now! I highly recommend you start with This is War to get the full effect of the series. You won’t regret it!

Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.
Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.
She barged into my life and easily became my best friend.
All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat.
She’s the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.

Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I’m not so sure she’ll stay for the ride.

Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I’ll prove we’re worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.

Checkmate, sweetheart.

REVIEW: Cruel Sanctuary by Tara Leigh

Cruel Sanctuary is a must read and is hands down a 5+ Star read for this book whore!

review-lips copy

Two words.
One name.
Damon King.

This man OWNED me. The “fixer” is not someone you want to mess with and you definitely don’t want to be anywhere near his radar, but in your bed…mmmm yes please. I love a great anti-hero and this man…this unbelievably ruthless, cocky man…is the ultimate! You will love to hate him and his crude ways.

Aislinn Granville is the girl everyone wants or wants to be. She has is all, or so it seems. She’s smart, sassy and beautiful, but full of secrets. When she learns nothing is what she thought it was, Aislinn is swept away by her protector. But not without a fight.

She is the kind of heroine I love to read about. Strong and confident that can hold her own in any situation and will never bow at any man’s feet. As the story progresses we see them both circling each other. Drawn like magnets, unable to resist the pull.  Damon walks the line between light and dark, tipping more on the dark side, but Aislinn is his light in the shadows.

I loved the duel POV and the writing was flawless. It’s a page-turner for sure! Cruel Sanctuary is book one in The Wages of Sin duet that ends on a huge cliffy! I cannot wait to get my hands on Corrupt Savior, book two!

Review: Just Exes by Charity Ferrell

4 Stars

This is book three in the Blue Beech series and is Lauren and Gage’s story.

Lauren and Gage were high school sweethearts and had planned a future together, but Lauren mysteriously ended up breaking things off and refused to tell Gage why. They both went separate ways. Now ten years later, he is back in Blue Beech, Iowa to help his ailing father, as one of the local cops.

This was so well written. I love second chance love stories. Factor in some suspense and mystery, I’m yours. I loved these characters. Ms. Ferrell does a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story. I seriously did not want to put this book down and by the end I was emotionally spent.

Let’s talk about the characters.

Lauren was sweet and a little naive if not loyal. She was the good girl that sacrificed her happiness to only to lessen someone else’s burden. I really liked her. Although there were a couple of Gage’s actions that I would have liked to see her react a little differently (ie the part he explained about the other women) She was so compassionate and trusting even after being hurt so badly (which she blamed herself for).

Gage was devastated after the breakup, rightfully so, but he tried to move on the best he could. He never got over the love of his life enough to fully move on though which caused a lot of issues that led to the tragedy that led him back home. I loved his character. Did I want to junk punch him on several occasions, yes, yes I did. But he was operating on the knowledge he had, not the full truth of what happened between them.

Overall, I think this series is utterly fantastic and this book was quite possibly my favorite so far.

Running into an ex you haven’t seen in nearly a decade is never a good time.

Running into your ex while he’s arresting you is humiliating.

Running into an ex you haven’t seen in nearly a decade is never a good time.

Running into your ex while he’s arresting you is humiliating.

The handcuffs close around my fists at the same time he promises to hate me until he takes his last breath.

I can’t blame him. He pleaded for me not to walk away.
He doesn’t know leaving him broke my heart as much as it did his.
It wasn’t for me. Rather, it was for someone else.

I skipped town after Hurricane Lauren obliterated my heart.
Coming home was a hard choice to make. Arresting her isn’t.
She has no idea of the demons I carry with me now. No idea that I’m a new man.

Two women ruined me.
One I gave my heart to.
The other punished me for it.

Review: Mistake’s Melody by Anne Malcom

review-lips copy

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful, this book owned me from the very first word. It deserves so much more than 5 stars.

Wyatt and Emma have known each other since they were teens. Before Unquiet Mind was a household name. Before…

That was before.
Before the fame.
Before they fell.
Before the hurt and pain of a love that would forever be tainted by their pasts.

This book wrecked me. These characters came alive on the page. And I was all too ready and willing to consume every word they spoke.

Emma grew up in a house that had no love.

Wyatt was constantly belittled and never knew his true worth. Together they found they were enough.

“I loved you when I knew it was a bad idea. And I knew that it would end in pain. But I did it anyway. I don’t blame you for breaking my heart, Wyatt. I blame myself for letting you.”

All of my emotions were left in pieces on the floor while reading this book. The push and pull, the angst…gah! I wanted to shake sense into both Wyatt and Emma. To get their shit together; to be happy. Their love was like a rose, beautiful to look at but you will bleed from the pain of thorns.

synopsis-lips copy

He’s world famous.
The most eligible bachelor in Hollywood.
Owns the stage and thousands of hearts around the world.
The bassist of Unquiet Mind.
Rock royalty.

But he’s none of that to me.

To me, he’s just Wyatt.
The teenager I met in my best friend’s garage.
I promised him he’d never get into my bed or into my heart.
It turns out I lied.

Review: Checkmate – This is Reckless by Kennedy Fox

review-lips copy

My “I’ll Just Be Over Here…” 4 star Review of Checkmate: This is Reckless by the awesome author duo Kennedy Fox.

NOOOOO! I’ll be over here, rocking in the corner, waiting on the next book to come out so I can stop all the tears. This book just ended on ONE HELL OF A CLIFFY!

Checkmate: This is Reckless, Drew & Courtney #1, is book 3 in the Checkmate Duet Series by Kennedy Fox. This duet series follows three couples, each couple having two books to tell their stories.

Where to start. This is the first book I’ve read by these two talented ladies and it will not be the last!

This book is a friends to lovers read. It was sweet to see the way Drew and Courtney interacted. It was easy. Drew needed easy, since his on again off again girlfriend was anything but. Mia was such a jealous and selfish woman. She continued to manipulate Drew for years until he finally saw her for what she was. I was sooooo ecstatic to see him finally open his eyes to see what a great person Courtney was. Not only as a best friend, but more.

One night of passion and one misunderstanding later I was flipping these pages so fast just to see what happened next! One minute I’m swooning over how sweet these two are together and then came the WTH…NOOOO moment.

Cliffhangers aren’t a favorite for me, but this was nicely done. I can’t wait to read what’s next! If you haven’t yet read Kennedy Fox books, you need to get on that now! I highly recommend you start with This is War to get the full effect of the series. You won’t regret it!

synopsis-lips copy

Drew Fisher is the type of guy every girl wants.
Noble police officer by day, charming prince by night.
He has no idea the effect he has on women, especially me–his little sister’s best friend.
I’m the blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see that girl.

It’d be easier to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn’t his shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it perfectly clear where we stand. Just friends.

I know I need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but every day he smiles at me, I’m left dreaming of what if.
He has girl issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny.
We’re friends, but I want more.

One drunken hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened proves to be more difficult than anticipated.

A crazy ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m the one worth breaking them for.

Checkmate, Prince Charming.

Review of Counterpoints by Laura Rossi

review-lips copy

I gave this book 4 of 5 stars. Counterpoints is book one of a trilogy and is a beautiful debut novel by Laura Rossi.

Isabella starts working at a PR firm for a racing conglomerate where their top racer is a cocky driver who is used to not only winning, but has a revolving door of women at his beck and call.

Christopher has everything. Fame, a career he loves and as many one night stands as he wants….until he meets her. The chemistry is instant, but will they be able to sustain it, or will one of them end up walking away…

“I am afraid to take a step forward and…miss the ground beneath my feet. You know, that awful feeling that you are going to hit the floor hard”
“Who says you will miss the ground?” she could hear him smile.
“What If I do though?”
“You’d fall down and then get back up again”

I loved this debut novel by Ms. Rossi. The character development was great and with only a few hiccups, and I thought it was very well written as well. I’m not normally one for cliffhangers, but I thought this one was well done and I can’t wait to read book 2!

“Next”: My Review of Scoring the Quarterback by S.M. Soto

review-lips copy

3 Star Review

I hated to give this low of a rating, but there was so much going on in this book, I had a hard time with it. Scoring the Quarterback by S.M. Soto had a lot going on.

The phrase “I couldn’t care less” and “Bar and Grille” were way overused and all this book was missing was a secret baby with all the different tropes running through it. There were so many issues with these characters and honestly the only ones I remotely liked were Natalia and Aliza, and I stopped liking Natalia after she continued being a doormat with no chance of growing a backbone in sight.

Luke was tolerable at first. Hot college jock destined for the NFL falling for the geeky girl, or so I thought. The way he pursued her, I thought it was an insta-love, I was wrong, sort of. I never got the frenemy to lover vibe. He pursued her; she was indifferent. Just as I thought it would change and get a little deeper into their “relationship”, he would either tell her he still sleeps with anything that walked (which, ok they weren’t dating, but really? Why would you tell her this?) and he kept playfully calling her hershey squirts, again, really?

Then when they started dating, he was sweet, she was smitten. Then he did the most unforgivable thing EVER. At this point, I was thinking Yes, this book is going to end on her HEA not being with him. But in the end, the doormat that she is took him back!

*SPOILER ALERT* Sorry, cheating is an auto no go for me. He constantly treated her badly and she either accepted she could do no better or just didn’t care.

Although this wasn’t my cuppa, there are TONS of people out there that like the cheating aspect of books. And even thought I didn’t necessarily like this book, it will not deter me from reading more by this author. Get it and decide for yourself.

synopsis-lips copy

Luke Caldwell has three abhorrent qualities to him:
1) He’s a pig-headed jock.
2) He’s a grade A asshole with the biggest, overbearing ego.
3) He’s a manwhore.

These three qualities alone should’ve had me running for the hills. I tried to steer clear of him, I really did, but it was an impossible feat. Luke Caldwell was nothing if not persistent, and the way he bulldozed through my life, not taking no for an answer is proof of it.

I tried to stay away from him.

I wanted to hate him. But I couldn’t. Luke was nothing like the idiot jock I pegged him out to be. He became a friend, a confidant, and after one unforgettable night, he became so much more.

Whatever this is between us, it’s impossible to ignore. I just hope when all is said and done, I won’t be burned by the college bad boy.

Review of INK: A Love Story on 7th and Main by Elizabeth Hunter

Incredible 5 star read! Elizabeth Hunter totally delivered on this sweet bookish read! I absolutely loved this book! This is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading by this author. I loved that she drew me in with small town feels then hooked me with the INK concept. Which is brilliant btw!

This book is centered around Emmie and Ox. After moving back to her hometown, Emmie is the proud owner of a new book store. While getting the storefront ready to open, she and her friends witness a lovers quarrel at the tattoo shop across the street and Emmie can’t help but fantasize about the gorgeous tattoo artist that would never give her the time of day. But to get her business off the ground she needs his help selling ink.

Ox has had it with women. His last relationship was toxic and now that he is out of a job, he needs to keep what he has with Emmie professional. That’s easier said than done. Sparks fly in this incredibly sweet and witty book.

I love the characters and the chemistry between them. Emmie and Ox were perfect for each other and I can’t wait for the next book in this series to knock me off my feet.

synopsis-lips copy

It’s everything but business as usual.

Emmie Elliot hadn’t expected to come back to Metlin, California. She definitely didn’t expect to stay. She returned to her childhood home with a mission: Sell the building that housed her grandmother’s book store and move on with her life.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

To reopen her grandmother’s book shop, Emmie will need a hook. She’ll need a strategy. She’ll need an… Ox?

Miles Oxford doesn’t have much interest in quiet bookstore owners. He’s a tattoo artist without a space to work, and the last thing he wants is to get involved with anyone after his last disaster of a relationship. Work and pleasure don’t mix for Ox, but since he doesn’t have any interest in the cute girl with the bold business proposal, he should be safe from any awkward complications, right?

She sells ink. He tattoos it. Unusual? Yes. But a book shop/tattoo studio might be the ticket for both Emmie and Ox to find success on their own terms. As long as they keep their attention focused on business.

Just on business.
